Child Theme

What is a Child Theme?

A WordPress child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality of another theme, called the parent theme. Child theme allows you to modify, or add to the functionality of that parent theme. A child theme is the safest and easiest way to modify an existing theme, whether you want to make a few tiny changes or extensive changes. Instead of modifying the theme files directly, you can create a child theme and override within.

Why use a Child Theme?

If you modify an existing theme and it is updated, your changes will be lost. With a child theme, you can update the parent theme (which might be important for security or functionality) and still keep your changes. It can speed up development time. It’s a great way to get started if you are just learning WordPress theme development.

Setting up the Demo Content

Automatic 1-Click Demo Importer

Setting up the demo content is super easy with our 1-Click Demo Importer.
Please, follow the steps below to import the demo data using the 1-Click Demo Importer:

Step 1 - Log into your WordPress Dashboard.

Step 2 - Go to Appearance > Demo Importer

Step 3 - Select a Demo Content, Widgest and Revolution Slider and click the Import button to start the import process.

The importer should be run only once. If something went wrong and you need to import the content again, you may need to reset your WordPress.
Use this plugin to reset the WordPress database : http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-database-reset/

Usually the demo import takes 5 to 10 minutes depending on the server speed & ram. If it loads forever this is 100% due to the server configuration or a security setting that does not allow to import content to your server. In this case you should contact your hosting provider and ask them to increase those limits to a minimum as follows:

max_execution_time: Minimum 5000
max_input_time: Minimum 5000
memory_limit: Minimum 5000
post_max_size: Minimum 5000
upload_max_filesize: Minimum 128MB
max_input_vars : Minimum 5000
allow_url_fopen : ON

First, you have to install all required plugins, and recomended plugins (if you want to use them) to import demo content.

Manual Demo Import

Some servers don’t support one click import. If you host your site on a sharing server or your server can’t handle the import traffic, one click import will fail. In this case follow these steps to perform manual demo import.

These steps are guidelines for a manual demo import. File names may vary depending on the Demo you are importing.

Translating the Theme

Oxie is localized and you can easily translate it to any language you like. Please make sure that the font that you are using on your website is supporting your language characters. For example Cyrillic characters...

Switch to some other language

Step 1 - Open wp-config.php in your main WordPress folder on your server using FTP.

Step 2 - Locate $locale='xx_XX'; in that file. If you can't find it, you need to insert it.

Step 3 - Change the variable value in that line to the localization string (from the list above).

Step 4 - German would look like this: $locale='de_DE';.

Step 5 - Save the file and re-upload it to your server. Overwrite the old one if asked.

Step 6 - That's all! The theme will now use the inbuilt translation of the language you set in that line. Easy, isn't it?

Translate to any other language

In order to translate the theme to any other language, follow the steps below:

Step 1 - Before translating your theme, you’ll need to make sure WordPress is setup correctly with your locale. Open wp-config.php and modify the line below, or add it if it is missing. See the complete list of language codes and country codes to find your exact locale. You can also follow the steps from above.

$locale = 'en_US'; If you enter locale from already translated languages, then, that translation will be used. See above.

Step 2 - Now you’re ready to translate your theme. Now, you need to create po/mo files for your language and place them in languages folder. You can do that using PoEdit program. Another way to do this is by installing the Codestyling Localization plugin. Install and activate the plugin and go to Tools > Localization (shown in your language), then follow the instructions on how to translate the theme.

Handling Theme Updates

If you update your theme to a new version which has an updated language file, you’ll need to rescan your theme using the plugin and then translate the new strings. Find your theme in Codestyling Localization plugin and click the Rescan link to have the plugin update the pot file.

After you have rescanned your theme, click Edit to translate any new strings the plugin found when rescanning. Remember to generate a new MO file after you have translated your new strings.

If you have used PoEdit to generate po/mo files, make sure to backup those files before updating or the files will be lost.
